What I learned from Marathon #2

How does that saying go? Fool me once shame on you, fool me twice shame on me. Yep, that is how I feel about running a second marathon. There was a glimmer of hope that is was going to be better than the last time, and well, it wasn’t, it was worse.

While I was struggling through mile 20-26, all I could keep thinking was, “Why am I doing this? This is no fun.” I then had flashbacks to my first marathon and I swear I thought the same thing at mile 20. “This is so not fun, why am I doing it?” Now, I am writing it down so I don’t forget.

My takeaways from this last marathon:

  1. I really like the 13 mile distance. I felt great about my 1/2 marathon time. I might even go as far to say I enjoyed it. I think from here on out 13.1 is going to be my jam.
  2. I am a horrible runner. I am slow, I struggle. Why do I do it? I am an athlete and I live in rural Mississippi. There are not many options beyond running that allow me to workout with buddies (and maybe one day I will be competitive). Which leads me to #3.
  3. I love having running buddies. They make the running worth it. They inspire me, teach me, and motivate me to keep going even when it seems impossible. I owe this race to my running buddy. She is a true marathon running rockstar.
  4. If you are going to run a marathon, run Chicago. The route is amazing, the crowds are fantastic, the weather was awesome. Downfall? You have to wait for the race to start for what feels like for-evah. And the walk at the finish I swear adds at least an additional mile if not more. And where was the pizza? I want to cross the finish and eat pizza. Immediately.
  5. Training in the summer is totally not the bee’s knees. It.is.the.worst. For my first marathon I trained in the middle of winter in feet of snow. I thought that was challenging. Running in 100+ temps and 99% humidity for 50 consecutive days, it is just plain miserable. To the point where I thought my body was shutting down. I can’t tell you how excited I am to start running in cooler fall temps. Because, October is totally my fav.

Well, now I have tons of time on my hands, I still really want to complete a 1/2 Ironman next year. I hope to hop on the bike and and back in the pool in the next month or so. I will keep you posted and that might mean more consistent posting. Lucky you!

Geek.

I bet you thought I gave up on my training. Nope, the truth is I spent the summer melting and sweating 10x my body weight daily, and therefore I didn’t have time to keep you up-to-date on my training. The long story short is, I am getting on a plane tomorrow to run the Chicago Marathon, I survived training in the Mississippi Delta’s sweltering summer, barely, and I can’t wait to eat a big ole cannoli once I reach the finish line.

I’ll let you know how it goes. Promise. In a timely fashion too. 🙂
